In 2022, more than one in five Australians had disability. That’s 5.5 million people, according to the Australian Bureau of Statistics. Plenty of them are dating, falling in love and building relationships. Yet many people with disability find dating harder than it should be, from inaccessible venues to apps that were never built with them in mind.
These tips cover the whole process, from writing your profile to planning a first date that works for you.
Know what you’re looking for
Before you start, think about what you want. It could be a long-term partner, someone to go on a few dates with, or a friend who might become more. All of these are good reasons to start.
Knowing your answer helps you write a clearer profile. It also makes it easier to spot people who want the same thing.
Write a profile that sounds like you
A good profile tells people what it’s like to spend time with you. Try to include:
- two or three things you love doing
- something you’re proud of
- the kind of connection you’re hoping for
Use recent photos that show your face clearly. A photo of you doing something you enjoy says more than a list of hobbies.
On Ability Amore, you can also record a video introduction. Many people find it easier to show their personality on video than in writing.
Talking about your disability
You don’t have to share anything you’re not ready to share. There’s no single right way to do this.
Some people mention their disability in their profile. It saves time, because the people who reach out already know. Others prefer to bring it up once they’ve started chatting and feel comfortable.
When you do talk about it, keep it simple and practical. For example: “I use a wheelchair, so I’ll suggest places with step-free access.” Share the details that help the other person plan a date with you. The rest can wait until you know each other better.
If someone reacts badly, that tells you something useful. It’s better to learn it early.
Getting the conversation going
A good opening message asks about something in the other person’s profile. “What’s the best concert you’ve been to?” works better than “Hey.”
Keep chats in the app while you get to know someone. On Ability Amore you can message, and make voice and video calls, without sharing your phone number.
A video call before you meet is a smart step. You can check the person matches their photos, and you’ll both feel more relaxed on the day.
Planning a first date that works for you
A first date should be easy to get to, easy to leave and easy to enjoy. Some ideas:
- Choose a place you know. A café you like means fewer surprises.
- Check access ahead of time. Call the venue about steps, toilets, noise and lighting. Many venues are happy to help.
- Pick a quiet time. Weekday afternoons are usually calmer than Friday nights.
- Sort out transport. Know how you’re getting there and home.
- Keep it short. An hour for coffee takes the pressure off. You can always stay longer.
- Tell someone you trust. Share where you’re going and when you expect to be home.
It’s fine to have a support worker drop you off or stay nearby. You decide what makes you comfortable.
When it doesn’t work out
Not every chat leads to a date, and not every date leads to a second one. That happens to everyone who dates.
If someone isn’t interested, try not to take it as a verdict on you. It usually means you weren’t the right match. The right person will want to get to know you as you are.
Why an inclusive app helps
On many dating apps, you spend your energy explaining yourself. Ability Amore is built for people with disability, so members understand from the start. The app includes large fonts, text magnification, voice-to-text and video profiles to make it easier to use.
Safety matters too. We use profile and ID verification, and a moderation team reviews every report. Read more on our Safety page, or see our guide to safe online dating tips.
